Open Conversations: Cloud Transparency

Krishnan Subramanian · April 30, 2012 · 1 Comment

At Rishidot Research, we strongly believe in having transparent and open discussions on topics related to our research areas. As a part of this move, we are planning to run a series of Google+ Hangout discussions on some of the topics of interest. We believe that every analyst firm should have open conversation with the community as a way to strengthen the industry.

Our first Open Conversation on OpenStack was a big success and the recording is available here. We have decided to continue this series of open conversations on different topics related to cloud and big data. Our second Open Conversation is on the topic of Cloud Transparency. The Google hangout and the livestreaming will happen on 14th May 2012 at Noon PST. We are running this with Open Data Center Alliance which is running Forecast 2012 conference in New York one day before Deploycon 2012.

We are still working on the panelists and we will update this post once we finalize on it. CloudAve is also running a giveaway where one ticket for Forecast 2012 will be given out to CloudAve readers. This hangout will also serve as a followup to the giveaway.

Confirmed Panelists (more will be added in the coming days):

  • George Reese – CTO, enStratus
  • Sam Johnston – Director, Cloud & IT Services at Equinix
  • Alex Williams – Media Pundit, SiliconAngle
  • Stephen Spector – Cloud Evangelist, Dell
  • Matthew Mikell – Cloud Evangelist, Dell

You can view the panel on our Youtube Channel live.

Deploycon 2012, the enterprise PaaS summit, is just over a month away and the organizing team is working hard to put up a great event in a short time. As a first step to this, we are launching the website today and registration is officially open for business. We are still very early on the agenda and we are hoping to have the full agenda ready in a week to ten days. We will update the agenda page as and when we finalize the details.

We take this opportunity to check out the new Deploycon 2012 website and start planning for the conference. You can also follow us on Twitter @deploycon and Google+. #paassummit is the hashtag for the event. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Open Conversations: OpenStack

At Rishidot Research, we strongly believe in having transparent and open discussions on topics related to our research areas. As a part of this move, we are planning to run a series of Google+ Hangout discussions on some of the topics of interest. We believe that every analyst firm should have open conversation with the community as a way to strengthen the industry.

The first conversation in this series is on OpenStack, the open source cloud infrastructure platform. OpenStack held a design summit and conference last week and there was lots of enthusiasm among the partners and practitioners. We want to bring interested people in the community together to discuss where the project is heading in the coming years. We welcome you to join us on Google+ Hangout which will also be livestreamed on Rishidot Research Youtube Channel.

When: April 26th 2012 (Thursday) at 2:15 PM PST

Where: To join the discussion, visit my Google+ page at the time or add me to your Google+ circles. It will also be livestreamed on our Youtube Channel.

The following have confirmed their participation in the event.

  • Dave Cahill, Director of Strategic Alliances at SolidFire
  • Narendar Shankar, Senior Director of Product Management at Nexenta
  • Boris Renski Jr., Co-founder & CMO at Mirantis
  • Alex Williams, SiliconAngle
  • Matt Weinberger, SiliconAngle
  • Ben Kepes, Diversity Limited
  • Niki Acosta, Evangelist, Rackspace CloudBuilders
  • Florian Otel, HP

We are hoping to see you on Thursday and let us take the OpenStack conversation forward.

Introducing Rishidot Research

Krishnan Subramanian · April 2, 2012 · 8 Comments

Today I am officially launching Rishidot Research LLC, a next-gen analyst firm focussed on helping enterprises navigate the fast changing computing landscape. In my conversations with enterprise execs, IT managers, etc., I found a common recurring theme. They all feel that there is a wide gulf between the legacy analyst firms and the new age firms, I am positioning Rishidot Research to fill the gap and help enterprises take advantage of the modern technologies without badly disrupting themselves.

Legacy analysts usually come with a good technical background but they are very conservative in their approach towards emerging technologies. Such a conservative approach worked well with enterprises in the past decades when the technological evolution was more or less linear. It didn’t put their enterprise clients in any serious disadvantage because they could always bridge the impact of incremental changes in technology by playing a catching up game. However, today’s technology is evolving at an exponential rate and the legacy conservative approach is turning out to be a huge drag on modern enterprises. It is just not helping them to stay competitive in an era when even small businesses can afford to have technology that help them compete with their larger counterparts.

On the other hand, the new age analyst firms that are pushing enterprises to embrace modern technologies are doing so purely based on the business impacts of these tools than any deeper understanding of the underlying technology. This leads to a mismatch resulting in massive IT failures, often leading to business disruption. This approach is also not working well for the modern enterprises.

At Rishidot Research, I have made a decision to bring together analysts with technical depth and modern outlook. I believe that my biggest advantage in the industry is to look at the problems more from a technical perspective than just randomly matching technologies to meet the business objectives. I feel that such an approach will help organizations avoid large scale disruptions as they embrace these newer tools to stay competitive. I am also confident that I can apply the same approach to scale this research firm in the future. Right now I am the only one behind the firm but I expect to expand this firm in the coming months/years with analysts who fit in the above mold.

After studying the market for the past few years, I am now confident that my approach to industry research can help both the enterprise buyer side and the seller side as we move towards the great computing convergence, a term I use for the convergence of seemingly disparate technologies like cloud computing, social, mobile and big data. I am confident that organizations will trust my approach to industry research and join me as they embark on their own journey towards this great computing convergence.

I hereby declare Rishidot Research to be officially open for business 🙂
